Which Matcha Powder Should You Choose? A Guide to Zenzi Daily, Ceremonial and Reserve
Not all matcha powder is the same. Taste, colour and how it behaves in the cup depend on where the tea is grown, how long the leaves are shaded and when they are harvested. At Zenzi Matcha we offer three matcha powders, all first harvest from Japan, stone-ground and free from additives. Here is how they differ, and which one is best for lattes, for drinking straight, or for giving as a gift.
Zenzi Daily Matcha – the matcha powder for your everyday latte
Zenzi Daily Matcha is a first-harvest matcha from Aichi, Japan. It has a smooth, balanced flavour with a light nutty note that is perfect in a matcha latte, with any milk you like.
Daily is shade-grown for a shorter period than our Ceremonial. That gives it a rounder, nuttier profile and makes it our everyday choice.
Use Daily for:
- Matcha lattes, hot or iced
Zenzi Ceremonial Matcha – our original matcha
Zenzi Ceremonial Matcha is the matcha where it all began. It is a first harvest from Aichi, Japan. The leaves are shade-grown for weeks before harvest, giving a vivid green colour, pronounced umami and a sweet, mellow taste with low astringency.
It is made to be enjoyed in an extra luxurious latte or on its own, whisked with hot water.
Use Ceremonial for:
- Traditional matcha in a bowl
- An extra luxurious matcha latte
Zenzi Reserve Matcha – our finest matcha from Kagoshima
Zenzi Reserve Matcha comes from Kagoshima in southern Japan and is the finest matcha in our range. The flavour is delicate, silky and naturally sweet, with very low astringency.
Reserve is at its best when it stands alone. We recommend drinking it straight so nothing masks its nuances.
Use Reserve for:
- Usucha, thin matcha: 2 g of powder and 70 ml of water
- Koicha, thick matcha for full intensity
- Moments when you want to slow down and truly savour
Which matcha powder should you choose?
- Mostly drink lattes? Choose Daily.
- Want a matcha that works both straight and in a latte? Choose Ceremonial.
- Want the finest experience, straight from the bowl? Choose Reserve.
New to matcha? Start with Daily in a latte, move on to Ceremonial, and save Reserve for a quiet moment. You will clearly notice the flavour becoming more refined at each step.

How to prepare matcha powder
- Sift 2 g of matcha (1–2 chashaku scoops or a level teaspoon) into a bowl.
- Add about 70 ml of water at 70–80 °C. Let boiled water rest for a minute, as water that is too hot makes matcha bitter.
- Whisk briskly in a Z motion until a fine foam forms. Drink it as is, or top with hot or cold milk for a latte.
Store your matcha somewhere dark, cool and airtight, ideally in the fridge once opened.
Matcha powder FAQ
What is the difference between Daily and Ceremonial? The shading period. Ceremonial is shaded longer, which gives more sweetness and umami and less astringency. Daily is smoother and nuttier and works best in lattes.
Can I make a latte with Reserve? Absolutely, but we recommend drinking Reserve straight to get the most from its delicate flavour. Daily and Ceremonial are better suited to lattes.
Which matcha is best for beginners? Daily in a latte is an easy start. If you want to taste matcha straight from day one, Ceremonial is a great first choice.
Which matcha makes the best Christmas gift? The Zenzi Collection, with all three matcha powders, is our most complete gift. It lets the recipient taste their way through and find their own favourite.
